Mongar

The journey from Bumthang to Mongar is one of the most beautiful in the Himalayas crossing 3,800 m high Thrunsingla pass. Mongar marks the beginning of eastern Bhutan. The second largest town in the subtropical east, Mongar, like Trashigang further east, is situated on the side of a hill in contrasts to other towns of western Bhutan which are built on the valley floor. Mongar is notably famed for its weavers and special textiles and fabrics.

Mongar Dzong
Mongar Dzong is one of youngest Dzongs in Bhutan built under the order of 3rd King Jime Dorji Wangchuck in 1953. However, construction of this temple still made use of the same style as earlier Dzongs in the country, without the use of any plans or nails. It is a perfect testament of the still thriving traditional Bhutanese architecture.
